Title: 1854 D Napolean III cinq centime
Post by: Humfrey on May 03, 2011, 07:37:03 PM
found a Napolean III cinq centime 1854 today but the eagle on it is upside down
does anyone know if this is common with these coins?

Ahaa or is the head upside down? ummm now there's the question. lol
all of them have opposite orientation, in fact most coins from the 17thC  (ie milled) have opposite sides, British or foreign.

Is it definitely upside down, IE, does it say "EMPIRE FRANCAIS" above the eagles head? Or is the die axis different than normal, making it look upside down? Any picture? Jon.......same as Chef

Empire Francais is above the eagle but eagle is opposite direction of Napolean

Yes that's normal, Britannia is always opposite to the monarch on our coins too.
