Title: Little and Large
Post by: roughneck on July 28, 2017, 08:37:43 AM
Hi Folks
Me and Ron had a funny old sort of day out yesterday.  We visited a Gloucestershire farm where we have previously unearthed Roman, Celtic and Medieval.  So we anticipated finding something to add to our ever growing list of finds.  We contacted the farm manager who said a few of the rape fields had now been harvested and ploughed.  The known Roman field was our starting point and this is where the day took an uncanny turn.  We've never seen or found so many pewter buttons, 80 in fact !!!  Ron was like a button magnet, the reason being that we use our Deus' via sound only and the buttons sound exactly like the Roman coins on this particular field.  I did manage to winkle out six Romans amongst the buttons, my first really large sestertius and five others, a Geo 3rd penny and a few other bits and pieces.  We tried another ploughed field but it seemed barren.  ID of the sestertius would be nice please.
Cheers and Happy Digging!!  Tom.

Just so happens I had a coin ID recently so I recognise the head. Yours looks very similar so could be Trajan. Nice early coin to find.
The buttons are from old clothes dug into the field to improve the soil. It doesn't matter if its buttons As long as your finding.

Thanks folks, and I think you may be correct with the ID Val.  My detecting partner Ron suggested the same yesterday when I first unearthed it.  Thanks for the info and it's a good thing to dig the buttons as when we've got them all, there should be goodies there for us somewhere.  Cheers.  Tom.
