It has just been announced that Steve Jobs, co-founder and guiding light of Apple has died. Steve was undoubtedly the most influential figure in the development of modern computer culture over the last half century.

Under his guidance Apple introduced the most important developments in computer technology, some of which then trickled down to a mass market through other companies.

If you use a computer mouse you can thank Steve Jobs for that. If you use a computer operating system based on folders, files and windows you have Steve Jobs to thank for that. If you use a ‘smart phone’ or listen to music through an MP3 player then Steve Jobs and Apple led the way with all these things.

Apple’s Macintosh operating system has always been far in advance of any other popular computer operating system, developments made on the Mac usually popping up in various forms on other operating systems eventually.

Apple’s iMac computer with its colourful semi-transparent housing revolutionized the look of computers and influenced industrial design in general for the best part of a decade. Steve Jobs closely supervised and steered all these developments.

The introduction of the iPod changed the way people listen to music. The introduction of the iPhone changed the way people use mobile phones.

It was Steve Jobs who single-handedly persuaded the rather backward-looking and skeptical corporations of the music industry to start selling music by paid-for download through his revolutionary iTunes online music store, in the process turning Apple into one of the world’s largest music retailers.

Even if you've never heard of Steve Jobs the chances are that he has had a considerable influence on your life. His death is a great loss, not only for the computer world but also for popular culture and technology as a whole.

Steve Jobs. A genius, a visionary and true historical figure. The fact I found out about his death on one of his products ( iPad ) and now typing this on another (iPhone) says it all really. He changed the world. RIP steve. Your spirit will live on!

Anybody who knows anything about this man will know how much he's influenced all our lives.
A sad sad loss. RIP.
