hi, is there any where I can look on the web to find local field names of farms? thanks.

I don't know of anywhere on the web, but you can get that info from old maps of your areas. Try your local archives office or library of 18th or older maps. These sometimes have the names of noted meadows recorded. Another way is to ask the land owners, long shot, but I have found more info by word of mouth.

Field names are indicators of past use. I call the field on which I found staters, the 'stater' field. The farmer calls it the 'bomb' field because of an incident during the war. However slight, there is always a reason for the name.

There's a wealth of information in the link below on names ... including those with possible Roman connections. Good luck on researching these 'messages from the past".

local records offices are good,always look for blacklands,blackfield etc as these fields named in the past usually denote places of habitation,hence the black soil.
