Great find Alan, I've only ever found a fragment of one.

It's circa 14th century, and a 'stock' seal rather than a personal seal. It reads PRIVE SV (Old French = Private).

A bird seems to be a typical motif on these, I'm not sure if it's known why. The design of this one is similar:

now its got me going, there may be a local connection with a nearby 'titled family' from the same period, who had the surname of Dove.

that will keep me busy over the coming months, researching that aspect.

already done it Bob -- after all, its our nations heritage that we are recording and every detectorist should be contributing to the national database, as and when they have finds over 300 yrs old.

[even though its a voluntary scheme, those detectorists that don't record, in my honest opinion are nothing short of day/nighthawks]
