Frampton Cotterell is, of course, famous for one thing – it’s where the cowboy hat was invented. If it hadn’t been for Frampton Cotterell John Wayne and Billy the kid would have had to wear straw hats. Originally designed to protect slaves in the West Indies from the strong sun, the wide brimmed ten gallon hat invented in Frampton Cotterell was adopted by the denizens of the wild west and became the standard headgear for cowpokes. After a legal battle, manufacturers of the Stetson in America had to pay the hatmakers of Frampton Cotterell a royalty for every hat they sold.

And we could have done with a cowboy hat or two as overnight rain cleared away by the time everyone assembled for the second rally in Frampton Cotterell in a week and the weatherman once again did his thing and laid on bright sunshine for us.

We had some brand new fields for our return visit to this farm and, after some initial confusion over exactly which fields were available to detect, we got started.

The theme for the day was set by ‘I FIND NOTHING’ who contradicted the assertion made by his site name and came up with a love token. This was in the usual condition for these kinds of finds but was probably a William III.

This was the first of five William III love tokens found during the course of the day. There was clearly a lot of loving going on in Frampton Cotterell in William III’s time.

Beachboy was next to come up with an interesting find – a Swiss coin from 1859 which may have been made of silver or some kind of silvery alloy. It’s the first time I can remember a Swiss coin being found on one of our rallies.

After lunch the farmer agreed to allow members back on the fields we had searched last week and, remembering how productive these fields had been a lot of members opted to move down the road onto the old fields.

Hammered coins were practically jumping out of the ground left, right and centre last week but surprisingly the hammies decided to stay put this week and, apart from the plethora of love tokens, hammered coins seemed thin on the ground this time around.

However a variety of other finds surfaced, including a nice Roman brooch from Minelabuser and a silver matchbox (sorry, I don’t know who found it). Rambo followed up last weeks gold coin with a nice condition cartwheel penny and Napoleon continued his silver streak from last week with a silver artifact.

There were quite a few Victorian silver coins appearing – I even had one myself . A bit of silver and a drop of sun. A nice combination.

Nice report Geoff - I thoroughly enjoyed reading that - especially the cowboy hat history! Smiley Great photos Rob as well!

I could only stay for a few hours due to a pressing engagement with Barnsley {I wish I hadn't bothered going to the game by the way! Huh}

My only find of note came from the turnip patch and is the first complete (minus iron spring plate} Jaws Harp I have found. I've turned up plenty of half ones before, so I was particularly pleased with this one.

Cheers

Really enjoyed myself - yet again.  No finds of note but thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and had a chuckle to myself at several disappointed worn out, shattered faces that passed me by   Grin
Think I got a bit of a tan though...

I have been racking my brain on Eric Meatslicers mystery find! I have finally remembered where I have seen something similar and its on a Roman spoon and I believe was used to help prise open oyster or clam shells.

See below for images.
