Title: Unusual finds
Post by: mole on March 31, 2009, 09:20:27 AM
during my many years of detecting I have made a few finds that are definatley non run of the mill one nice sunny afternoon I decided to test out my new detector a whites beachcomber 6D on the mountainside behind my mothers house I ,d been detecting for about an with only a predecimal halfpenny and some rubbish to show for when I got quite a strong signal using my hand trowel I cut into the ground which was rock hard flipped the turf back the signal was still coming from the hole by now I was down six inchs suddenly I came across a flat stone  by now my heart was beating like a drum with all kinds of strange thoughts going through my  mind had I found a hoard  ??? was it  roman  or medieval I removed the stone to find a round rusted container I tried to open this by hand no luck so I levered it open with my trowel only to discover that my potential hoard was a dead racing pigeon buried at eight inchs plus ??? ;D in a babys powdered milk tin I consider to have gotten off lightly though after relating my story to a lady at the local library who informed me her friends husband who was also a detectorist whilst out detecting one day had a great signal dug down a fair depth to recover a metal container only to discover it contained someones ashes >:( ??? but you know what they all say if in doubt DIG ;D

My good friend Derek came across a box containing the remains of an old collier while out detecting with his dog (some of you may remember the story in the Searcher few years ago.)
He found it in the GAP (famous Abercynon land mark) he carefully replaced the box but everytime he took his dog near there he,d try and dig him back up lol

Word to the wise if you dont want to be dug up repeatedly like this poor fella make sure your loved ones dig a very deep hole   ;D
