 is the 2nd pic a pic of the back of it? or are they two different pieces,  wouldnt be some sort of branding iron would it or similer to our medievil seals?

Right, its not a bed warmer, its not for printing clothing, its not a stamp, not a branding iron and its not a book cover. Smiley The other photo is indeed the back of the item. For scale have a look at the pound coin next to it.

The clue I will give you is it is indeed from China - my local take away confirmed that and i believe it to be dated around 1820  and they were imported into Great Britain mainly by the Dutch for English use.

Another clue later.
