Title: Re: Cut half hammered Post by: The Doc on January 16, 2013, 07:44:19 PM Well found. It's London mint, moneyer Abel. I think it's very late John (class 6b or 6c1).
Title: Re: Cut half hammered Post by: GJH on January 16, 2013, 08:05:01 PM Thank you both, I don't know how you do it,I look in the spinks book and just get confused,I thought it might have been a John or a Henry but thats as far as I got. Thanks again Geoff Title: Re: Cut half hammered Post by: WeCan-Octavian on January 16, 2013, 08:11:13 PM Im the same, just taking punts really lol

Thanks again Geoff I don't think the Spinks book is all that clear. It would be much easier if I could find my 'Short Cross' Pennies book by Wren. It's all about the shape of certain letters and the number of curls and the like. Being able to read the moneyers name and mint signature also help to narrow things down - in this case [AB]EL.ON.LV[NDE] who was active from class 5c to 7a according to Spinks. Title: Re: Cut half hammered Post by: probono on January 17, 2013, 03:02:03 PM John 1199 - 1216 Spinks 1350b page 156 I was looking at this - I didn't think the face was elongated enough for a class 6b, the crown jewel and the 'X' of rex were more like class 5b, but according to Spinks Abel didn't strike class 5b coins. If only the other half of the coin were there it would be much easier :) Title: Re: Cut half hammered Post by: GJH on January 17, 2013, 04:21:17 PM John 1199 - 1216 Spinks 1350b page 156 I was looking at this - I didn't think the face was elongated enough for a class 6b, the crown jewel and the 'X' of rex were more like class 5b, but according to Spinks Abel didn't strike class 5b coins.
