Title: tooth or claw Post by: db4 on August 10, 2018, 05:17:51 PM Wayno found this the other day while taking down an old stone wall, any ideas,
Tooth, Claw or Tusk ?. Title: Re: tooth or claw Post by: Val Beechey on August 10, 2018, 08:00:53 PM My first response on seeing those pics was Oh Wow ! I just love finding things like that. Did you see I found a Sharks tooth a couple of months back ?
My thoughts are that it’s a Brown Bears tooth and was worn as a charm against harm way back in the early Bronze Age. There are some interesting, recent, articles on Brown Bears if you google them. Seems like they’re going to be re-introduced to the UK somewhere near Bristol. Some sort of Theme Park by the sound of it. Lord help the locals if one of them gets loose. Great find ;D Title: Re: tooth or claw Post by: Phil Aberaman on August 11, 2018, 08:52:32 AM Well saved !
Good call Val, very similar to a few examples on google. Title: Re: tooth or claw Post by: Resurgam on August 11, 2018, 09:04:36 AM Interesting find; well spotted. I wonder why they countersunk the hole?

I assume its to prevent wear and tear of whatever they used to hang it, Leather thong etc. Title: Re: tooth or claw Post by: Val Beechey on August 11, 2018, 09:53:52 AM Smoothed of edges would stop it fraying. That makes me wonder if it’s a claw. Animal claws are like our nails, formed with layers and they separate.
Rough nails, drive me nuts :P Looking at the first pic more carefully you can see striations along the length. It’s a claw! That ‘killer’ Squirel was a baby and it thought the man was his daddy.
We have a cure for them over this side of the bridge. It called a gun. ::) Title: Re: tooth or claw Post by: Neil on August 13, 2018, 07:56:13 AM Boars tusk in my book. I have found one before.
Interesting find. Title: Re: tooth or claw Post by: db4 on August 13, 2018, 12:22:53 PM Thanks for your input. I think Neil may be wright.
Title: Re: tooth or claw Post by: Val Beechey on August 13, 2018, 08:08:04 PM I never thought about a Boars tusk. Much more likely and probably more modern.
Still a nice find though.. |
