Out swinging the DFX today; very quiet. Couple of cartridge cases (as ever . . . ) button, loads of scraps of lead sheet, and then this popped out.

Very deep, resting on the clay - I'd say about 10" down.

Looks like a spindle whorl to me. It's lead, about 25mm in diameter, 8mm thick and the hole is 7mm diameter. It's obviously been cast in an open mould as the reverse side is smooth(ish) and flat(ish) and the top face is rough (I make my own aluminium castings so I speak from experience . . . )

Not like the decorated bi-conical spindle whorls I've found before, so I had a look on the net and saw that it could be very early - if it's what I think it is. Could also be much later.

Firstly - is it a spindle whorl?

Secondly - if it is, how do I find its age?

Thanks for any advice.

I have just had two like that both patterned and believe they are a very old version of the spindle whorls, as for ageing them that is very hard
