Title: Four similar items.
Post by: wittsy1 on June 07, 2015, 05:12:51 AM
Thanks again for the welcome to the forum. Thought I would start the ball rolling with these four oblects. They where found within a couple of metres of each other using my CTX. The field is pasture and overlooks a river estuary. Any ideas what they might be. Hope the pictures are good enough for ID purposes. Thanks in advance.

:o They be treasure they be ahhh!  They look to be awls and possibly bronze age, a cracking find and no mistake as you have 4 they do fall under the treasure act so must be reported but could prove to be an historicly imortant find ;)

Obviously an awl as we know them are pointed (many of these do have one pointed and one flat end) their exact use isn't known but are thought to be woodworking tools though the amount that are found it makes me wonder if they had a more everyday use ???
The treasure act states that an assemblage of two or more prehistoric metal items constitute as treasure ;)

I wonder if these might not be awls but copper nails from a boat or ship?

Well it's a good suggestion Doc but I feel that flattening the end into a blade is inviting the wood the split along the grain :-\

Chris it's more the flattened end that sets them apart ???

Thanks all for your replies. I thought they where Bronze Age chisels so a few weeks back, I emailed the same photo to FLO. He seemed to think they where mid 20th century soldering irons, but I think he is getting mixed up with somebody elses finds because he said that he checked the metallorgical content of the items which showed that they where composed of modern alloys. How can he do this from a photo?
So I still think they could be Bronze Age.

:D :D :D FLO's can be good but they're not that good ;D It's entirely up to you but if you want to send me a copy of the email (chefphones@live.co.uk) I can get them rechecked with another FLO and if necessary recorded centrally via the British Museum so your FLO is none the wiser ;)
