Good luck Sharkey, a bit of advice that may or may not be of help on your site is....... Roman coins that are contemporary with your brooch will have reasonably good signal and similar to any other coin but during this first half of Roman rule coinage, at least in the more rural areas, still isn't used on a day to day basis with bartering still being the norm.
Many Roman farmstead or settlement sites do span the whole of the occupation period and have brooches from the first two centuries and the coinage from the latter two and it's this later coinage that many people leave until they know what they sound like
...................................................They sound bad...really bad and can signal close too if not just in the iron section, so go slow and dig any two way signals in the last iron section Wink

According to the 'new' system (Mackreth) it is type 5673 - I'm not sure what 'type' it should be called, as I'm still trying to understand the bits and pieces, but it comes under 'Wroxeter types', but says it is a 'headstud' type of brooch which is a Colchester derivative with a polden hill spring arrangement and a bloke called Philpot calls them his 'Wirral' type from the numbers found there, suggestin

LOL you have much to learn grasshopper Grin

A lovely find Sharkey, made even better by the enamel still present. OK well as Probono says it's a Wroxeter type which are actually derivatives of trumpet brooches, yours has a hinged pin and not a Polden hills spring, it dates up to around 150AD and is far more of a common find in the north Midlands.
It's classified as a Hattatt 1538 Wink

This is one recorded on PAS

Well, brooches aren't my thing yet Smiley - but I've just bought Mackreth - the individual words make sense, but I haven't had time to understand them all yet!  Grin - I'm assuming that Mackreth has come up with a new numbering system - it would be nice to have a cross reference to Hattatt as you would in a coin book.

Well done on getting Mackreth, I found that picking one type of brooch and studying it's evolution before moving on to another was the best way for me. And yes your right, why on earth they couldn't stick with the accepted Hattatt record system and just add the newer variants I don't know.
