Please excuse the rather crude sketch but it's not easy to see from the photos how the item would have looked. I'm trying to work out if it was an arrowhead as I can't find any other examples online that have 2 blades and then a raised part on top which is smaller than the 2 blades either side. The blades have snapped off but can see where they would have been. Anyone have any ideas?

What's the metal as can't see from photos.
If its ferrous and the shank looks like it could be about 3 times longer it's possibly a bodkin type arrow head. And a lovely rare find as they don't last all that well in the ground . 14th or 15th c

Thanks Guys  Grin

Radnor Bandit, what's the best way to find out what metal it is? I'm a newbie with only 3 months under my belt so still very much learning!

Hmm.

It could also be the tail end of a toy plane - it's amazing where I've found some of those.

Do magnet test 1st. Anything that sticks is ferrous. Everything else is non ferrous. Green finds are usually bronze or copper alloy. Grey to dull silver especially buttons is usually tombac or white brass.
If the arrowhead? is grey then I agree with probono's idea maybe a dinky meteor or comet.

Have a look at  dragonarchery.eu.  Find 'arrowheads' select 'medieval' and look at no.12
I think there's a chance it might be what you found.

Hope these links work for you. Still haven't found out how to pick up and transfer page links on this iPad.

A great scetch I must admit, it looks to me as if it has an alloy present. As for an arrow head ? I have to say I'm not convinced, it doesn't look quite rite from the pictures. Be good to handle it any way and even better to post it up for all to see and pass comments..... Wink

Would love it to be an arrow head, in two of the pictures it looks like it's been cast to me, how much does it weigh? Could you do a rough Archimedes on it to find density.

Sorry for the late reply as been away!

I think perhaps it has been cast but Mark Lodwick is going to take a look. With a bit of luck I'll be able to report back soon, though my hope of an arrowhead is slowly slipping away  Cry
