I'm no expert but I think it's an early Saxon sceat and from what looks like the word "red" on it, it could be Eadred or Aethelred both of which were kings of Northumbria, Not only is it a pretty penny (or sceat) but it could be worth one to.

The Doc will have a better idea or pop it up on UKDFD for ID

Thought it might of been a silver penny of Howell Tha!for a moment.but no ZYL on the back.
You would have been a rich man if it was.Theres only one in existense,AND THATS IN THE BRITTISH MUSEUM.*Looks from that period.SAXON!(LATE).

it looks like a Saxon silver penny, but i cannot find the exact one in my book, i believe it's a job for Peter.

It's a cracker any way, just the type of coin that you don't want to hit with the spade.

What is the thickness of the coin Jim , gotta be careful with those , fakes do turn up, if it's very thin it's a fake, if not, nice coin!

An interesting coin Jim. It is a penny of Alfred, with the moneyer's name WULFRED in two lines, Spink 1066 or 1067.

However, it could be a contemporary Viking imitation or a more modern forgery - I think it would have to be examined by an expert to determine this.

Here is an example that may be a Viking imitation:

...and on this page is one that has been identified as a forgery (scroll down to the fourth coin, No 5115):
