Post by: kaister on October 26, 2009, 09:01:32 PM
less and less silver content through the years,, top row 1924, 1928
second row 1930's
3rd row 1940's
forth row 1953 and 1960ish

Spot the difference....

The early ones are the best - even the feel of the higher quality silver is different from the more modern coins. If I can come away from a dig with at least one silver coin, preferably a hammy   ;D but early milled silver is very welcome :D - then I'm happy.

Hi Deb

British coins were debased in 1947.

In otherwords they were silver before this date. After, an alloy was added as it was cheaper.

Consequently coins that come out of the ground with date 1947 onwards tend to be very tarnished.

Same thing happened in Roman times!!!!........and Medieval .....same old, same old ::)

Hi kaister :), i think rjm has said it all, the older they are the more silver content, hence colouration and general condition, Ace ;)
