Post by: handyman [Alan} on December 05, 2010, 05:35:39 PM
Hi Peter

Can i call upon your good services to help with the ID of these 2 that appeared today!!

the denarii has AVGVSTA  and PAX on reverse.

the hammered is farthing size ..

i'll aim to get better pics up on the site tomorrow.

The denarius was the 1st fin d of the day, the hammered was a surface find, towards the end!.

Nice finds Alan - they go a tad too blury for me when I open them - not that I could tell you much about them anyway!

Well done - were they found on a NARC rally?
Neil

I'm beginning to think that the denarius is that of Julia Domna, Augusta 194 - 8AD to 217AD.

Lovely finds Alan, well done. As Neil said they are a bit fuzzy when enlarged but the Denarius does look like Julia Domna.

Can't wait for tomorrow's pictures Alan, they certainly looked great in the field.

Here's my little "nummus", but judging by the lack of corrosion, I think it must be something other than copper alloy. Any ideas?

hi tony - i think its a poor quality [maybe a barberous] denarii .. or silver coated nummus.

most certainly its 4th century - constantine -- wolf suckling twins!

cheers

Nice finds Alan - need some better pics though. I don't think the Roman is Julia Domna, but will tell you more when I can see it clearer.

I think the hammered is a Henry VIII halfpenny, but again will be able to give a better ID with sharper pics.

It's a Rome commemorative, AD 330-340, like these:

..and here's the rest of the stuff. Buttons - including a lovely horse image on one of them, 2 lead powder shot measures, 1 crotal bell that rings, 1 long thin thing that could be part of a spur? and 3 coins - covering 2000 years in date.

cheers

To complete the picture then, here's my other bits too...

Help would be appreciated on the last two photos. Although I think the last one is a modern toy motorbike.

The new pictures are a little better Alan. I can confirm that the denarius is Julia Domna after all:

Julia Domna Denarius. IVLIA AVGVSTA, draped bust right / VENVS FELIX, Venus standing left holding apple and drawing out fold of drapery. RIC 580, RSC 198.

And as I said, the hammered is a Henry VIII halfpenny, London mint, Spink 2356.

Umm could be, it's a well known fact that most captured storm troopers brought their toys with them lol......Sorry Alan I couldn't resist it.

LOL -- he could have had it sent over via red cross parcel!!!  - or maybe they decided to stay in UK at end of war, rather than being repatriated.

Local farmers are telling us stories of POWs working on the local farms!.

Cheers

Alan

ps - geoff -- how does the principle of the different detector frequencies work when detecting?  for example whats the difference between a 18khz and say a 12 khz machine? [and dont say 6khz!!!!]

Alan,
Strange you should say that about prisoners working on the farms. I went to suss out a derelict Medieval Church some time ago and found a re-built brick gate-way with concrete tops. One of which had come off and was lying on the ground. Scratched into it was a name (can't remember it) under that P.O.W. 1939.

The basic rule of thumb is that the higher the frequency (above 12KHz) the more sensitive the machine is to very small items but does not penetrate the soil as far as the lower frequency (circa 7KHz) which are better at larger and deeper targets. For instance the Nautilus I'm currently trying out runs at 14 KHz and found that tiny piece of a hammered coin the other day at about 2" with a good signal, had I been using the G maxx running at 4.6 Khz it may of missed this piece but have found a whole hammered penny far deeper.
The minelab eureka is made to detect tiny gold nuggets and runs at 60 KHz. But all these "rules" are effected by the size of the coil.

My mother used to tell me about the German POW that used to work on the farms around Cwmbran, apparently they were very well mannered and gentlemanly.
I used to know a few people from Italian decent around the Bridgend area whose farthers' or grandfarthers had been POW's and after the war had gone back to Italy to fetch their wives and make a home here.
This is a sculpture that was made by an Italian POW and is a well known land mark on the road to Wells.

Thanks for info Geoff and Val, much appreciated indeed. I think there's a lot more to come out, of the work of PoW's in the community in WW2... perhaps i'll research it when i retire!

oh - find attached the lates pics taken by a good friend of mine who has all the camera gear.

enjoy
