I am looking to get a hand held GPS system in the near future. Will spend up to £200. Don't want an all singing, all dancing system. Just want something reliable, robust, accurate and value for money. All I am bothered about is recording find spots. Any recommendations? Any that I should avoid? All advice welcome.

i've been using this type for over 4 years now. i find it very easy to use. Once its set up, its a  case of switch on and go.  i can record findspots to 10 figures.

my colleague picked his up for £40 - 50 on a certain auction site.

cheers

Thanks Handyman. I just checked out that unit on that link and it seems ok. I was leaning towards a Garmin so that one is definitely to be considered.

depending on your IT skills, there are trackers out there, which allow you to plot tracks &  findpsots and download them onto GE straight away. Maplins used to sell such products, i haven't checked them out recently, so they may still do so.

I haven't had too many find spots myself this year!! I am just being optimistic for the second half of the year. My luck has to change soon.

Thanks all for the advice and info. I like that travel tracker. However, I think I shall probably go for the Garmin Etrec.

I have the Etrex venture hc and it's really good , depends what you want to use it for though . You have to choose between a basic one which is ideal for marking finds or one with an sd card slot which comes with a very basic map built in . We're Garmin catch you out is there isn't much difference in the price of both units ,but and it's a big but is the price of garmin maps that you buy on a sd card are £60 upwards ! You can download free maps from a site called  talkytoaster onto a blank sd card  , when you read the instructions it seems quite daunting at first , but if I can do it anyone can ! They are very detailed with tracks and contours and buildings . I'm still learning mine but it's got me out of trouble a couple of times when digging bait and the fog has come down . Good luck which ever you buy.

Thanks Peanut. I have checked that thread out and absorbed all the info. I don.t want to do too much really, just record the findspot, and that's about it.
