Day out yesterday in the sun, on a Roman site yet to be ploughed, as you can see from pictures muck was spread over most of the field, well I say most of the field the part of the field I was searching however good job I chose this side as can be seen from the finds in particular the lovely folly of Constantine shown with unfortunate bronze disease on it, yet to be removed?  Will be interested to hear how you would go about removing it!! Also a nice complete crotal bell in one piece and a few roman grots . The lead toy bike and man came from an area of the field littered with rubbish and iron that was dumped in a hole previously dug years ago and was a lucky to come up in one piece and still having signs of black and brown paint, and since mounted on wood by me for display.

Nice Magnentius too.

It's often said that if there is verdigris on a coin like the Constantine that it was stuck to another one in the ground.......at least at some point.

If you want to remove the green stuff, there are a number of ways to go about it.

You could try a gentle mechanical action (a hardened wooden point for instance)

or you could also try an alkaline detergent - I use (although I'm going to have to buy another tub of it as mine has 'gone off') Deb Janitol. Quite a lot of the Beachyhead hoard (well one of the hoards anyway) was cleaned with this. You have to be a little careful afterwards - and it also depends on how much underlying patina there is, but I've also cleaned quite a few coins with this (generally the silver-washed ants).

Others would probably suggest to do nothing Smiley
