NO..... my Eddy VI is a forgery

Just got my Eddy 6 shilling back from the FLO and his report states that my Eddy is "A silver forged / contemporary copy of an Edward VI shilling" The front has some green corrosion dots showing thru from an exposed copper core, and the coin is light.

Not the best of news, but he did say contemporary copies like are quite rare and it could be worth a couple of bob ? Not to sure how you go about valuing a forgery?

Any ideas ?

A lovely find Dave and being a counterfeit means the story of it's manufacture would certainly be more interesting and full of intrigue as the sentence if caught minting them at that time was to be hung, drawn and quartered

Well Geoff, they did have a more ROBUST sentencing system back in those days. But hanging, drawing, and quartering does seem a little excessive.

It is a great looking coin, the others forgeries I have seen from that period have lost their silvering and are looking quite distresses, so I was supprised when it came back as a forgery.  

Ah well, It's the biggest hammered I've ever found, and it does look good in my small coin collection,

Well if you had a good lawyer they could probably get you off the quartering The offence was "Coining" and was considered high treason.
It's not a silvered forgery by the looks, more like an incredibly low silver content, basically a copper coin with a bit of silver thrown in for colour.
It's still a hammered coin and contemporary so a top find

I wouldn't be to sure its a forgery as the green is very common as its from the Base silver issue, continuing from henry VIII, the silver content at this time was at its worse, struck in low grade base silver, also a lot of the contemporary forgeries was struck in brass and they are quite common just take a look on P.A.S and see the condition.

Did your FLO say why it was a forgery?

I spent 20mins trying to find a die match, I found one very close to yours with the D on EDWARD slightly slanted but the rest of the coin was worn and hard to compare.

A few weeks ago I spotted a Henry VIII Bristol Testoon on line what a friend of mine brought for his collection it also had the green spots as its also from the debased issue....... it would be interesting to hear what the FLO said, there not always right some of the coins iv seen are listed completely wrong.
It may be worth someone else taking a look

Thanks for the reply. I had a look at the brass copies, and they are nothing like mine. The FLO put a link to some on the info sheet he gave me with the coin. as you say they are in a poor state.

The FLO paperwork said "A silver forged / contemporary copy of a shilling of Edward VI - initial mark indistinct. The front face of the coin is pocked and a green coloured corrosion is showing through - presumably from the exposed copper core. The coin feels light".

Diameter 31.3, thickness 1.0 mm Weight 4.0 grams.

I'm no expert on these things, and I think Edward VI coins are a specialist area. Who would you recommend I take it to for a second opinion?

As Geoff said it doesn't look like a silvered forgery, its more like a poor silver content, but looking at your coin its pretty good.
I know a person what should be able to help you, if not he knows all the top dealers.
