Lead that you find when detecting may have & probably has been in the ground for centuries,it will have a whitish coating,This coating of lead is `VERY TOXIC`,keep your fingers away from your mouth if you handle it.Be sure to wash your hands before touching food!. The post about lead poisoning due to putting pellets in the mouth got me thinking...I used to use my teeth to close the little round weights around my fishing line good job I didn't go fishing that often. I didn't realise that even relatively small doses of lead were dangerous - I was thinking more along the lines of many years of constant exposure. I will certainly be more careful in future.
