Title: Re: Need Help Putting Pictures WIth Post Post by: Neil on July 29, 2010, 07:46:49 AM That looks to be a cracking Papal Bulla - would love to find one.
Great photo and welcome to the site Neil Title: Re: Need Help Putting Pictures WIth Post Post by: Chef Geoff on July 29, 2010, 11:21:41 AM Welcome aboard Sskipper ;D. That is a lovely coin, as Neil and I were discussing they were thought to have been issued as a way of paying your way into heavan, so I guess that rules me out of ever finding one :(
Title: Re: Need Help Putting Pictures WIth Post Post by: Neil on July 29, 2010, 01:08:42 PM They're are not coins guys. I don't think that was me Geoff, unless it was the Vodka talking.
Threads were passed throgh the middle of them to secure Papal documents from the Vatican. Cheers Neil Title: Re: Need Help Putting Pictures WIth Post Post by: Chef Geoff on July 29, 2010, 01:32:49 PM Yes it was vodka night ;D
What I mean is, if you gave alms to the church in any quantity you would receive a document stating the fact and blessing you. The seal which could be made of gold (from Rome) was often kept as a good luck token for the afterlife. Title: Re: Need Help Putting Pictures WIth Post Post by: sskippers on July 30, 2010, 02:52:10 AM Oops, I should have identified what I am holding in the picture. It is, actually, a Papal Bulla from Clement IV 1265 - 1268. Some good eyes out there. Thanks for your kind words. Here are a couple of close-up pictures of it. I found it up near Hunstanton. It measures about 1 1/2" in diameter. From what I've read, it did have a cord running through it to attach it to a document, to prove it was from the Vatican. Skip

Lovely find sskippers - you must have been really pleased when that came out. Great post Neil Title: Re: Need Help Putting Pictures WIth Post Post by: sskippers on August 03, 2010, 02:42:30 AM Yes, Neil, I was happy, but didn't know what I had. I knew it was definitely better than a sharp stick in the eye, but had never seen one. An 85 year old metal detectorist told me what it was. Skip
