Author Topic: Detecting next to churches  (Read 2164 times)

Have recently noticed how many churches are pretty local to me.Although i live in a very rural area within a ten mile radius of home i have twenty seven churches of medieval origin. Having looked at the historic churches survey i decided to look at some on my travels this week with a view to detecting up to the church wall. Having now visited over half of them only two remain with open fields next to them. Infact access to some of them is still medieval and it is amazing how houses are allowed to be built next to them with such poor access. But detecting next to them is now almost impossible. Will have to think of somewhere else to go. Below is a example of this. This is Bryngwyn Church access is just wide enough for my Jeep and the Settlement around the church comprises of three houses which have totally wrecked the perimeter of the church.

Paul

You must live near to me. My grandad buried there! Go detecting around this area a lot lately.  If your stuck anytime - drop us a note. Like a bit of company, my mates who usually come with me are from up the valleys

I think everyone has the same idea when it comes to church,s
Looks like an idea place to search so chances are they have been detected.
Every Rally club or other wise ive been to, rarely does anything  interesting comes up.
judging by the posts on this forum there still worth a stab.

good luck Paul please keep us posted

Think some have been hit pretty hard, but I would never miss the opportunity to detect near a church or the footpaths leading up to them, keep trying!

What about Motte and baily castle sites. I know the castles are protected but would you detect around them and expect to find anything. Most would date from the 12 / 13 century i guess and within a ten mile radius of me i have thirty. What do you think folks.
