Title: Detecting Insurance
Post by: rjm on June 30, 2011, 07:52:50 PM
For the minimal cost of about £6 for several million pounds worth of cover it makes sense to have insurance
via F.I.D. or N.C.M.D.

It isn't just a case of someone tripping in a hole that wasn't filled in properly. There are so many things that
can go wrong when you are on a farm metal detecting that it is worth having. Yes, it is very unlikely you will
ever use it, but you never know.

The things the insurance could cover is:

Digging to retrieve a target and damaging a water pipe, drain pipe or electric cable.

Failing to close a gate properly an an animal getting out and causing an accident, or loss of
an animal.

Dispute or legal action over a found item.

Damage caused to farm machinery.

damage caused to a farm building by digging.

The list is endless and only limited by one's imagination. You need it to detect with a club or DW and,
even if you detect on your own, it's got to be worth a few quid every year..

Cardiff City council insist SCAN members have liability insurance to detect on council parks, woodland,
and open spaces.

When I got married I even needed public liability insurance for an hour or so for the ceremony in a castle!!!!
What they thought might happen I don't know, and one would assume they'd have their own inusrance.

You need it for your car, your house and contents, your holiday. I even have dental insurance, and aren't
warranties a form of insurance.....so that covers household white goods, tv's, etc etc.....

Most of us have detecting insurance but for those that don't, for the sake of a few quid each year (not even
two pints of beer) I'd strongly advise getting it.

Anyone else got thoughts on this?

No Val as I said I've never heard of anyone needing it but that's the thing with insurance, things always seem to happen just when you've let your cover slip. And I would recommend individual cover for everyone and as FID and NCMD are the cheapest way of doing this then I would go with one of these or check and see if you can get it tagged on to you're household insurance.
It is not personal liability or personal detecting insurance but public liability and is there to initially cover legal costs from being sued for an event which can be proved to be the result of a negligent act.

Its a no-brainer to have insurance via either FID or NCMD. I'm with FID and for a few pounds, I'm covered and receive a quarterly newsletter. Would advise anyone not covered to do so. Here endeth the sermon....... ;D

Well, that has always been my argument. We are insured, here at home, with NFU for  the simple reason, they suit my lifestyle.
Apart from the usual fire, theft and accidental damage to buildings and contents, my animals are insured for 3rd party damage and so am I. I am also covered for 3rd party damage and legal costs up to £10,000.00 on or off my property or when participating in leisure activities.( i.e.Horse riding events) This I have in writing.
This, though is not acceptable to some organisations (nameless) who insist I have cover with someone else (nameless) and guess what !!! the underwriters are  NFU. ???

Go figure  ??? ::)

It's exceptionally rare that I swear and even then it's normally if I hit my finger with a hammer
doing DIY !  ;D

If swear words are in some of the jokes I post they are that way when I receive them and even
then they are asterisked out.

As for kids on the site (if we get any under 16?), well, I suspect they swear worse than you or
I could ever do!

The thing that makes DW so successful is that it isn't solely related to metal detetcing. It's a
lively site that discusses a range of things, with jokes and puzzles, and other posts of interest!

Long may that remain. Don't strangle me!  ;)  ;D

Ps. See you Sunday if I'm unlucky  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
