Although the name is often used loosely to refer to that part of Gloucestershire between the Severn & Wye,the Forest of Dean proper has covered a much smaller area since Mediaeval times.
In 1327 it was defined to cover only the Royal Demesne(Sovereign`s or states territory) & parts of parishes within the hundred of St.Briavels & after 1668 the Forest comprised the Royal Demesne only.
This area is now within the civil parishes of West Dean,Lydbrook,Cinderford,Ruspidge & Drybrook.
The Royal Forest of Dean,24000 acres of ancient woodland was a Royal hunting ground.
Author JRR Tolkien visited the area regularly & is said to have based "middle earth" featured in The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy,on the area.
He was particularly inspired by "Puzzlewood",an eerie,mysterious network of paths laid down over 200yrs ago.
