Title: Be Careful
Post by: Richy on March 27, 2009, 02:44:50 PM
I recently went to a farm with millsy, we found very little but did dig up quite a few .303 bullet cases. I put a couple in my finds pouch with the idea of cleaning the bases to see if I could ID them. When I got home I noticed this little swine.I disposed of it responsibly.

lol  Richy,  i once found a large live air aircraft missile thing, still red paint on the end, it was only under some leaves ect behind a large house, by the looks of it their kids used to play there too,
i moved it out of the way then went home and phoned maindy barracks and Brecon  about it,  they said its live but in a good safe state,  they told me to take it to a police station as they didn't have the means of disposing of it themselves and the police have,  ???
i asked for a replica for a swap for a keepsake,  they couldn;t do me one though doh,
so off i went back to the site,  wrapped it in rags  to keep it steady and  popped it  into a large tin,  when i got to a police station there were 3 policemen there,  when i told them what i had they fled  lol,#
one came back and wanted to know more, i showed him and he took it away and gave me my receipt,  iv'e never seen policemen look so worried i tell you lol

Good story alan - I like it! When I first started detecting I also found a live bullet and took it to Fairwater nick round the corner from where I live, only for the Duty Seargent to proceed to bang it on the counter tring to get the earth and rust off. He soon stopped when I told him in front of his fellow officers "You keep doing that sunshine and it will go BANG!" ~He wasn't amused - I promptly left - no idea what happened to it!

I find them quite often now and tend to dispose of them safely myself.

I used to detect on Beachy Head and the South Downs. Sometimes 100 signals in a row would be ordnance, mainly .303. Me and my cousin found enough to start our own war!

I found this little beauty at a rally last year. its a Dorma 243 large game hunting round i found it on a deer farm its about 3 inches long

Ive been meaning to take it to the police just havnt got round to it
It amazes me how careless farmers can be

I did hear of 2 club members finding one like this and firing it
i could explain how they did it but i think that would be very irresponsible he he

You can never be too careful Alan, I've had quite a lot of live rounds over the years & I've also had 3 Grenades too.

It may be worth a mention that if live ammo is found & the Police are called, they in turn normally call the Bomb Disposal people (if it's not just bullets) but it is a free service so the finder nor the landowner will be charged.

Here in America we find fully loaded UZYS and rocket launchers and AK47s. Everyone it seems is armed and ready here!. Guns are a plenty here and its a real problem! Be glad you live somewhere where guns are rare!. I deplore violence but here its common. Our law inforcement officers all carry fully automatic weapons in their autos. I for one dont like it a bit!

I went to the Caerleon rally today. We had the bomb squad in. Better to be safe than sorry . It was a false alarm and we couldn't detect in the field for a few hours but at least nothing went "BANG"   :o

Thats was a judgement call I had to make today gents! ::)

Everyone who looked at it agreed it looked like a bomb  :o - this included two members of DW who work in armament and a retired soldier. Also two friends of the farmer looked at it and they also work in armament maufacturing (how odd was that) and they also agreed I did the right thing calling in the Bomb Squad.

The bomb squad when they eventually arrived also thought it was initially a bomb, until it turned out to be a  . . . .(full story to be published later tonight on the Rally Report with photos, so no spoiling it anyone! ;D)

Neil.. if anyone complains about today and the actions everyone took in rleation to the suspected bomb find  all I can suggest is to ban them completely from every rally you ever hold.

The right thing was done and for those that know no better, both soldiers from the bomb squad  looked at it while still in the hole and they went back to their truck saying they were not sure themselves. Only when they went back with shovels etc did they find out what it really was.

So if the experts were not sure on their first look how can anyone else pass judgement about something that turned out to be completely innocent.

Even the farmer asked for it back to... using his own words.. "to pull the **** out of his 2 friends".. who also worked with munitions who also inspected the find.

The right thing was done and anyway nobody lost detecting because there were other fields available.

Another good day out ... well done for the rally and well done for calling the police.

Better safe than sorry.

Not phoning it in was never an alternative in my opinion. Just one of those things. The right course of action was definitely taken.

Thanks for the support lads - nice to see you all back me up on it!

Now, please next time try not to find anything that might go Bang! I'm going grey as it is and don't need any more encouragement! ;D

Cheers all
Neil

Well done Neil a decision had to be made and the right one i believe. One question though. You came past me today with your detector swinging at a speed of 100 mph. Is this your own technique or is there a manual available.  ;D ;D

hi malcom you are quit right in what you said. me and my mate steven were out detecting a couple of years ago i had a lovely siganal dug down to see what it was.to my amazement i found four little bottles me like an idiot picked one up  to have a look what was in them. wrong thing to do they turned out to be incendiary bombs we  put them back very carefully. we then went to tell the farmer and phoned the police when the military tured up. there were 60 bombs there. they evacuated the small village dug out the bombs put them in skip and blew them up  the moral of the story dont mess with something you know nothing about.
