one of our club members, who helped me at a talk last week, produced a large tray of crotal bells -- there were 16 in the display box!!!

he's an avid detectorist, been swinging it for 6 years!

Love the Saxon Chronicle quote Chef.

There are still huge amounts of hoards yet to be found the last two years have proved that with the Viking one, Angl Saxon and the most recent Roman hoard.

One day . . .

Yes Neil it's a beguiling quote. I read it years ago when I first started detecting and I think it has fueled my imagination ever since. It's a good one to remember when its freezing cold and your wandering around ankle deep in mud.

regretfully we couldn't get to chepstow today, due to previous arrangements. However, i did manage 2 hours out today with techony and mrs h, and between us we came up with the following.

the commemorative medal came up and the broken up fragment was 6 inches away ... nice to get them back together again.

Finally can anyone identify the object to the right of the medal?

cheers  c u at ludlow

Nice going Alan, Mrs H and Techony. Not sure what the unidentified object is but I love the Medal, I've found a few of these over the years, lead and bronze but I have never seen one of that cross pattern before, love it.

Hi everyone

1st pic are the finds from a WW rally in wendover yesterday, these will be handed in for recording next week.

2nd pic is of 2 lovely buttons, this morning before the rain came.

Fleur de lis button, has come back from FLO with a date of 13th/14th century

enjoy

Title: Re: A few finds from Sunday past
Post by: handyman [Alan} on September 13, 2010, 01:41:27 PM
well, if the 4 days on the roman dig last week weren't enough. these finds came out over the w/e.

the lizzie threepence is dated 1565, is folded like a love token and is blank apart from 1 letter M on the obverse side.

i'm interested to know what the 2 objects are on the top line, the curved one looks like part of a necklace, and as for the 'splitter' i'm not sure.

2 nice george 2nd halfpennies which have waxed up well, and a lovely button with a fleur de lis pattern on it ... any idea of age? i'm guessing medieaval.

enjoy....... i'm going back to work for a rest!!!

went out monday for a change and got this little set of finds. 2 nice buttons, a radiate nummus, a nice piece of decorated bronze, a watch winder and a possible chess piece.

enjoy.

Title: Re: A few finds from Sunday past
Post by: Chef Geoff on September 22, 2010, 09:36:38 AM
Good going Alan, your "chess piece" is the end of a Tudor/Stewart spoon handle.

Title: Re: A few finds from Sunday past
Post by: handyman [Alan} on September 22, 2010, 11:34:05 AM
wow --- thanks for the pointer in that direction Geoff - will go check it out.

Now that you mention it, i do recall seeing the knop end of another elizabethen spoon handle, similar to that above, but without the decoration.

Could prove to be a very interesting piece to research.

cheers & happy hunting

Alan

similar to one, half way down this page.
http://www.colchestertreasurehunting.co.uk/2008septnewarchieve.html (http://www.colchestertreasurehunting.co.uk/2008septnewarchieve.html)

PAS lists these spoon handles as EARLY POST MEDIEVAL (Certain), Circa 1500 AD - Circa 1599 AD

Title: Re: A few finds from Sunday past
Post by: Chef Geoff on September 22, 2010, 11:46:01 AM
Those are the ones and PAS are wrong (again) they may date back to an earlier period but most that have provenance are between late 16th to late 17th Century. (Elizabeth to Charles II)

NO NO NO, It's luck not knowledge lol, I have found quite a few over the years and it's only in the last year or two I found out what they were courtesy of Richard 16DD.

Title: Re: A few finds from Sunday past
Post by: handyman [Alan} on September 22, 2010, 02:56:34 PM
hmmm - in that case, are you certain that they are not part of a chess set!!!!!

Techony and I hit a new field yesterday and these were just some of the finds from there. It looks promising.

If anyone has any idea of the last 2 pics, feel free to share. I'll try and get some better pics later on.  Though i think its a good chance that its a Unit.

Cheers & enjoy

Title: Re: A few finds from Sunday past
Post by: Techony on November 15, 2010, 04:08:48 PM
Here's my bits including "Excalibur", a love token, a totally worn farthing sized disc, and another one that is totally corroded. I think the lead token is actually a counter and my Georgian halfpenny turned out to be a button. Still, I reckon the new fields have promise. Let's see what the next few months bring  ???

Any ideas on top left? It would appear to be perhaps an oil lamp control piece. The disc reads: "Alsion Lamp Co. Birmingham"

Well done to you both on your first hammereds of the year. If you can get a better pic of the cut half, I'll attempt an ID, but wear might prevent it being too precise. it looks like it might be Winchester mint.

I don't want to disagree, but I think you'll find that it has to be newer than that as the 1000ths (375) system didn't come in until 1854, Which is the same year that 9ct gold was legalised.

Thanks for the info Geoff. That's a rule that they didn't build into this nifty little wizzard then: http://www.gold-traders.co.uk/hallmarks/ (http://www.gold-traders.co.uk/hallmarks/)

Unfortunately, that probably puts us back to 1922.
