Despite most of the UK countryside being more or less underwater for the last month or two,  Tafflaff once again managed to find us a nice farm in a very promising part of the country that was in a detectable state.

It took a bit of a leap of faith for our members to ignore the persistent rain we’d been having in the preceding days and believe in the weatherman who had predicted a largely sunny day with the occasional shower. But in the end that is exactly what we got.

The farmer and his family were very welcoming and accommodating and this farm boasted both a set of toilets and a bar which was opened up later in the day - almost unheard of luxuries on DW rallies.

Unfortunately the farmer’s young son had been the victim of a nasty accident with a horse. He was hospitalised for 6 months and in a coma for 2 months. He received extensive surgery at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Deadlock suggested that we have a whip round to raise some money for Birmingham Children's Hospital at the rally so he went round with a bucket and the members collectively contributed £484.13 for this good cause which was handed to the farmer and his wife to pass on to the hospital.

Well done to all our members for being so generous. Even some members who were not able to come on the day made contributions.

Once we’d had the usual meeting to let everyone know where to go, the members were let off the leash and headed for the fields.

The ground was in really lovely detecting condition on the stubble fields to the north of the farm. It just it had just enough moisture to be really easy to dig to give really good signals but was not sticky on the boots. A lot of the hammered coins that subsequently appeared came from these two stubble fields.

First to appear were two Lizzie hammered pennies, one flat and one folded, from the stubble fields to the north.

This broke the ice and once things got going the finds started to come at a steady rate. GI Jan came up with a lovely decorated spindle whirl although unfortunately grazed with a spade.

Further hammered coins appeared, including a Charles I penny found by Hoover G and an Edward penny.

Towards the end of the morning, Shunngav came up with a commonwealth hammered silver penny - the first commonwealth coin he'd found and envied by many of us.

The fields continued to produce interesting finds throughout the day including what appears to be a three-legged model cauldron, a hallmarked silver spoon and many and various milled silver and bronze coins.

Late in the afternoon Svaipa found a rather interesting milled silver coin which appears to date from 1677 but with an unusual obverse which appears to be of foreign origin and will need some research to establish exactly what it is.

Nobby's efforts were also rewarded towards the end of the afternoon with a Roman brooch - the only Roman find which I know of for the day – unless anyone knows differently.

We were joined on the fields by the farmer and his family who had metal detectors of their own - This must be a first for one of our rallies. It was nice to see our hosts so interested. I hope they found something.

Thanks are due to Deadlock and Handyman for helping out with the organisation of the day and Tafflaff of course for finding the land in the first place and liaising with the farmer.

Geoff
