Detecting with BIG James, Mary and Liz! - Rally 67

The Detectingwales.com loyal masses headed over the bridge once again today for a new farm that promised Roman, but decided to only let us see Stuart and Tudor coinage.

Mike picked me up from Cardiff in darkness, and a quick journey meant we were at the farm shortly after 8am to find a few early birds already there. A brief chat and walkabout with the farmer to sort fields and parking and the DW hordes started to arrive.

Well done everyone on the parking, reversing and straightening up, it was a bit of a squeeze but before long we were all parked up, decked out like a local militia, and raring to go.

Today saw us playing with a mixture of stubble and recently ploughed but left to go to pasture land. It’s a huge farm and we deliberately avoided half the fields to play on at a later date.

Into the stubble, and I had barely turned on “old faithful” when the jungle drums beat out the news of a hammered James shilling falling to the aptly named member – Hammered. True to the sound of the drums I happened upon a beaming hammered. with an absolutely beauty of a coin in his claws – a shilling of James 1st!  It is only his second hammered coin ever, and both have now come from DW rallies. He had another later to add to it, but we’ll get to that in a little while.

Next up was myself finding a brace of Tudor ball buttons within 2 feet of each other. This all sounded promising, but not what we were expecting as we were in spitting distance of a recorded Roman road – where were those pesky Romans?

DW stallwart, and all round nice guy, Tom Tom was next to appear with a City of Bristol token, that he took an age to find in his pocket, and it wasn’t to be the only one as his buddy JJ and John Herjest  had a 1666 one as well.

Roger next appeared on the horizon with a cracker of a buckle that has sadly been a bit dented, but I think with a bit of heat and pressure may straighten okay. I saw a couple of cracking buckles today, (a lovely one fell to Herbie) and I always think they are a tad more personal than a coin, as someone has wandered into Ye Olde Buckle shop or sat next to a travelling salesman and though “I like that design, I’ll buy it!”

Mike was next amongst the hammered with a truly hammered coin of the same name that I don’t think will ever by deciphered unless The Doc can work his magic. Equally Cheffy (he of the quality headphones) had picked up a tiny little hammered coin of James or was it Charles- I forget.

Back to our Shilling finder, who had now added to it with a 1561 Lizzy sixpence. Not just any old coin of the “Virgin Queen” but a real crisp, quality one, that would grace any and all collections. He was having a stellar day and just couldn’t stop smiling!!

A few of the said queens hammered pennies also appeared with Cable having one, and a grotty one for a chap I’d not met  before and stupidly forgot to ask his name. Post a photo on this thread matey.

Proconsol was feeling in a fishy mood today, and managed to catch a fish head waterspout, that we speculated maybe left over from the visiting Italians. You kind of had to turn it around a few times until you got it, but a fish is what it is. One for the FLO possibly Geoff as it is an unusual fine.

If you are going to have a heart then have a gold heart, and that’s exactly what Deepsweeper did by finding a 9ct gold locket, and then added to it with a 1923 florin. Looks to me like a splinter of a diamond in the front of it, and its somewhat sad the photo of a loved one has disintegrated.

Another hammered shilling turned up via Webber of we think a James 1st Irish Shilling (thanks Doc), although it’s a tad more worn, but still one Hell of a chunk of silver to find.

Not to be out done, toward the end Drylands mate produced a William III sixpence and a Mary sixpence.  Dryland in fairness had found a few buttons and remains a hammered virgin! Don’t worry mate the cherry will be popped eventually and then watch them rain in!

Big thanks to Dale and Dave Ha for both speaking to the farmer over the past week – well done guys as always it was very much appreciated. Also the poorly TaffLaff for finding the farm, and of course all of you for making an enjoyable day as always.

I headed home about 3.30pm as the leg was gone, and Mike was paranoid his hair was  getting curly.

Thanks all for a great day out.

Keep the Faith

Neil
