Went to a farm on the Gower with the Swansea Metal Detecting Club today.

Another beautiful day - blue sky and sunshine, and parking in the field where we were detecting.

In the first half hour of everyone switching their detectors on, John, one of the members,  found a nice hammered penny.  Great, I thought - this should be a fabulous day.
Well, after my tenth tube and bits of broken buckles and some buttons, I thought that the one and only nice find of the day had been found  Cry

After lunch, everyone set back to it and we all wandered away from the cars.  After about an hour, Tyna found a cut half.  Here's a photo:

Tyna waved her hand in the general direction of where she found her hammy, and I made my way up and down the area.  I had a cracking signal - so big and loud, I thought it was a can lid !  Imagine my surprise, when, from just a few inches down, out popped this Roman brooch !!

Then, at the end of the day, my brooch was voted "find of the day" - I was well chuffed  Cheesy

Nice going both, love the fibula it's a late 1stC Polden hills type. And well I'm just jealous of the cut half, I was only saying to Rob last week that I haven't found one for about 10 years, I must be doing something wrong Sad

Great finds for you both. The short cross cut half is a very interesting one. It's Rhuddlan mint, moneyer Halli. The full legend reads hALLI ON RVLA. These are often found with the legend reversed, which appears to be the case with yours unless you've flipped the image yourself.

And the brooch is very nice too!

Thanks Peter  Wink I did not flip the image - apart from changing the brightness and a small crop, the image is "as is".

What is the year of the coin?

Well done Debbie. One of those equals out a whole load of junk.

And very well done Tyna to find the cut half. That makes up for at least a months worth of junk.
