could the letter Y be a reference to Yeomanry?   so the CG could be a local yeomans group? -- perhaps
cheltenham and gloucester yeomanry?
caerleon gwent yeomanry?

I agree, could well be Yeomanry, but I can't find anything for "CGY". The crown looks Victorian. Can you post a picture of the back please Rob?

Rob could the CGY be short for CALGARY in Canada. Just a thought.

Hi Rob

thats a great start, -- i agree with Peter in respect of it being Victorian.

here's a similar one to start the ball rolling

Take a look at this for a possibility. This text refers to a Central Glamorgan Yeomanry , Fair play on Chef last night he said it would probably be Yeomanry.

http://www.angelfire.com/ga/BobSanders/YEOMANRY.html

Two troops of Central Glamorgan Cavalry was raised in 1820 by the efforts of John Nicholl of Merthyr Mawr and others. Most of the officers and men were from the areas around Bridgend, and Cowbridge, training was carried out on the Ogmore & Newton Downs and drill at Bridgend where the Headquarters was situated.

seems like a very good bet that its from this group.  cheers  alan

That looks like it has to be the one Rob - great detective work!

I guess this may be a pretty rare button.
