Title: 010712 And then there were two Post by: Techony on July 01, 2012, 04:42:05 PM Well, with Handyman off sunning himself in Canada, DiggerDave and I decided to hit yet another, as yet unsearched, part of the parish. Before I got there, DD had already picked up a piece of pot off the surface with a medieval or Roman looking face on it.
Five hours later and I think we've found where all the coppers have been hiding. Luckily the soil has been kind to them though, and the date is easily visible on three of today's georgian halfpennies. DD also clocked up a love token and a viccy sixpence along with a couple of harness buckles and a hoard of tyre valves ::). Hopefully he'll post up the piccies of the silvers l8r. But the best find of the day was yet another landowner stopping by to say hello and inviting us onto his land. Whatever you do, don't tell Handyman ;D as I think we've just hit the jackpot. Woohoo! Turn it 90 degrees to the left and you have a Turtle ?? or something similar. Might help with ageing it.

Very popular through the ages but I would say your bit of pot is Victorian. Your very lucky to find the 'best bit'. usualy find plain bits.
Val Title: Re: 010712 And then there were two Post by: Chef Geoff on July 03, 2012, 09:52:15 PM I would say that it's far older than Victorian and is a piece of a Bellarmine jug from the 17thC and I would hazard at a guess that the head is meant to be that of Cardinal Roberto Bellarmino, who was anti protestant and anti alcohol.
