Title: 2 hours today
Post by: david995 on January 04, 2016, 07:29:04 PM
Sorry about the picture quality will post better ones tomorrow the ring looks interesting no hall marks but it is silver, old ?

I think the elizibeth has a double chin perhaps it is an accurate portrait ?

the small hammy is in real good condition i will need to anneal it a bit anyone know what it is ?

The coppery coin has a large shield on one side and a faint shape like a barrel on the other

Great haul there David, would like to see better pictures, the ring looks like it could come under the treasure act mate ? Medieval 1500-1600. For some reason it's showing up even worst on my I pad , I'm sure some one will put me rite if they can gee a better picture. ;) Thanks for showing its been a bit quiet on here lately.

Thanks paul ,  yes very quite on here was nice to be out with the sun on my face and perfect detecting conditions with the wet land

yes pictures are rubbish poor camera and artificial light not helping , the age your suggesting  on the ring would tie in with the hammy's age but i think the small hammy is older

Outstanding David! what a session :o I'd go more 12th century on the ring and in the same family as this one

Thanks for the link geoff

i think mine is not as old, only on the basis it looks better finished more polished and not as rough or course as the one in the link but i would stand corrected as i know nothing of these things , apart from the small hammy other hammy's on the is field have been elizibeth 1 not found many though , so thought pauls suggestion was possibly on the mark , but hope its 12th whats the small hammy that might help a little

As you can see Geoff has found a good  paralell I must say I never would have thought it was as early as that that, but clearly comes under treasure act and a great find David. ;) more to come from this site.

The finish would be more down to who made it not when and also the ware it had had before being lost but the reason for saying high medieval is the decoration on that PAS page you'll see links to other rings with similar designs all dated to a similar period but if you look at later medieval or even post medieval this design style is totally missing from the record so I'd be confident with the 12th to 13thC date. ;)

Thanks geoff

i sure hope your right, i will be showing to my local arcological trust they will have someone to help im sure , if the small hammered is around that age which i think it is, that will help validate the date , i have only done a very small area of the field so hopefully more stuff to come

I'm not the best on hammies but would need a better pic to have a go, looking at what appears to be a double annulet in the centre will probably be a dead give away to those more knowledgeable.
It sounds, and looks, like a great site David and certainly a "slowly slowly catchy monkey" one, good luck ;)

yes geoff there is no noted history on the field and funny enough 2 of us detected it for quite a while the other day and only found a small love token and 2 190 sixpenses ,

But on the strength of the love token thought i would select a small area and do it all metal,  full sensitivety everything turned up to the max gain to max everything , and its heavily mineralised so my ears were on fire after 2 hours but the depth was unbelievable and worth it

Very nice finds there, it doesnt always follow that there is a lot of history for a field it could have been sporadic and not recorded
