Title: A pair of thingies
Post by: SpineyDave on February 18, 2014, 09:48:40 PM
Has anyone got any idea what these are? I found one years ago near Hereford, and the other was found at the Shepton Mallet rally last Sunday.

They are solid lumps of non-ferrous about 2 cm across the lump and 3cm top to bottom. Both appear to have been snapped off on the shaft. Both have the little hooky thing coming off the bulb bit.

They must be reasonably common for me to find two, in to different locations.

Come on you experts

Thanks, Dave

Not too sure about mushrooms, but they are things of purpose, no idea what though.

Ahhhhhh! Those flippin things come back to haunt me, yes they are pretty common and functional, I was visiting a farmer and was chatting to him in the barn when I spotted one in situ and I thought aha that's what it is....well that was a good few years ago and do you think I can remember not a chance :-\

Not sure what you'd call them but they are for looping horse reins over.

Rein terrets I think. They can be found in different shapes on top of the securing rod. I have had a crown and artichoke. A horse's head is also fairly common.

Rein terret thingies then....  I guessed they were things of purpose and that's why they are relatively common.

I've had a quick look thru Google but not managed to spot one yet, I'll track a one down as I'm interested to see what a whole one looks like.

Thanks to all, even Chef with his senior moment  ;)

Hey watch it old man ;D No none of those answers jog my memory and as the arm always seems to be pointing down the the rein guide idea falls flat. ???

Picture it (complete with spikey end) 45 degrees to the right and stuck in the side of a barn or  hitching post. ;)

If I remember right they where fixed to the saddle to wrap the reins around.

I'm beginning to wonder if it was part of a shootbolt on the barn door, the one that goes into the floor ???

could it be something to do with a hammer off a powder gun maybe , funny how both seem to have a slight bend in the bottom , like something being pulled or pushed then overtime they just snap ??
