Title: Explorer, which one ?
Post by: sodbuster on May 31, 2009, 07:56:12 AM
I've pretty much decided on an minelab explorer as my next machine , what is the difference , if any , between the explorer 11 , xs , se, etc.

i don't know much about these other detectors, but a lot of people seem to be going for the etrac, even the explorer club,  can you try and look up some stats and field tests on them

put this way i had the ex11 it was rubbish and to slow on recovery so went back to xs much better on recovery than the ex11 they all say that the se is not as good as the ex11 so that says the xs is better than the two of them i would say try the etrac it is alot of cash but that go,s for all explorers so alan all i can say is stick to what you got mate and keep your money you know the saying a fool and his money soon parts ;) thats just my veiw on it mate minelab are a rip off :-[

the e trac is a very easy and complicated machine.if you get one you will know what i mean? there is a lot of veryables in the machine which is a pain, you have got to have complete confidance in it to win or you will give up before you start.if you have had a explorer before the e trac it does not seem too complicated.but i myself feel that it as not as deep as the explorer 2.this could be because of 2 reasons in my opinion 1 is that i am not getting the best out of the machine due to be it new to me.and second the conditions @ this moment are very dry making it more difficult to detect since upgrading last week.

IM USING A SOVEREIGN G T  AT THE MOMENT
WHICH IS EASY TO USE

soz but everyone nos that the explr range is the best out there, if it werent then 90% of tectorists wudnt be using them

once you get a decent programme set into it, then it only takes a few weeks to get used to all the noise and when to adjust the sensitivity

id get a cheap second hand explr11 first, they go for around 400 on ebay, then if you get on with go for the etrac

trust me you wont need another machine

Thanks romano-brit for the info . It seems from the responses I've had ,people  either love them or hate them . I'm going to borrow one before I make up my mind .
 Thanks again.

yes mate ive had the two of them and the xs is better that the ex11 its to slow on recovery it likes iron more put it this way put a coin six incs from a bit of iron on the ground and see if you can pick that coin up you got no chance the ex11 got a double digital read out the xs got one it takes twice as long to get from the coil to the readout this is a fact so you can compare a xs to the ex11

I have the e-trac and by far it is the best detector I have had - started with a second hand cheap and cheerful Viking, then a Fisher, then the Minelab Sovereign, then the Explorer II and now the e-trac (before the prices went up !!).  Well balanced, separates non-ferrous from ferrous -by the tone - great both on land and on the beach.  This will last me for a good many years. :)

i own a ex11 and a fisher75 and the only time the ex11 see's the light of day is if i have a beach session. as phil said the recovery time is a joke compared to most mid priced detectors

Thanks for you continued input guys and gals. I have been doing a bit more delving into the pro's and con's and found some really good information on youtube. There are some really good videos out there .
The recovery time videos are an eye opener, I was absolutely appalled at the explorer.I do tend to have a pretty fast swing,( at least until I have a break) , with which the whites M6 copes with, I guess I could slow down a bit, but do I want to ?

I was always put off the Explorer by two things, the weight and the recovery speed. They've always been the best all round machines on the market. The E-Trac excels because of the new processor giving it a LOT faster recovery speed.

I've got the Safari and I'm well pleased with the recovery speed. Don't know how it compares with the E-Trac as I haven't used that machine but would guess that E-Trac is faster due to the far greater cost of it.

What I love about the Minelabs is that they ignore coke/hot rock that other makes have trouble with. The minelabs also excel on the beaches and are brill at picking up small and/or thin metal such as hammereds.

The E-Trac and Safari are still a little heavy but that's the price you pay for the best all round machines out there.

Sodbuster ( Alan)  :) have you seen the video where the e-trac verses the goldmaxx on the thin gold chain!!  :o :o that one is a real eye opener Phil ( Colleggwent) should take a look at it if he doubts the minelabs ability to find the gold  :) he,s dead right ::) mole

If you look behind the hype,

the e.trac / explorer 11 / se

there are only subtle changes but a vast diff in cost.

Many believe the trac is an explorer turned upside down with a few extra gimmicks.

when buying any new tector its down to a gut feeling, and how easily u are parted from your cash  ;D

Hello Romano Brit thats why I use a goldmaxx and explorer the two compliment each other there are lots of other successful combinations !!!! BUT !!! a lot of detectorists are using this one ;D I personally find it very effective :o :o everyone to their own ??? ??? ??? good hunting mole

Explorer 11 I use very very slow, in all metal, they will pick up the smallest roman bronzes in ANY conditions! I use the explorer on two separate roman villa fields they will cope much, much better with high mineralisation, than single frequency machines.  ;D

( this is my findings and opinion, ;D)

my estimation is this mate i love the se for its noisy talkative state using it in my setup which is slow-n-lows set up slightly changed .
yet the etrac has an air of quietness that seems to pull out goods from iron in the same hole . if you want a fast land detector by a xp goldmaxx power as it is much faster and goes deep enough not to worry you will find loads of small stuff in iron that many who are not very good with thier explorers miss .
so toss a bottle in the air i mean coin and heads or tails it till you get a firm winner mate .
if you do go down the beach alot then forget xp as they are not wetsand useably i dont think
