Title: Been asked to to find a wedding ring
Post by: MuckMan on May 23, 2011, 09:02:53 PM
I've been asked to find a wedding ring in a garden from a friend of my girlfriends, it's quite a recent loss but any tips on how to search a garden thoroughly will be appreciated. Thanks  :)

grid it off and do it very very slowly covering every inch

oh .. discriminate out all other objects other than gold signals

I agree with all Alan says, plus if its a recent loss you shouldn't need a spade a trowel at most

Thanks, it's my first time searching for a specific item and I don't want to let them down. I'm going round tomorrow afternoon so I'll keep you all posted.

Check EVERY signal. Checked out my Wedding ring and was amazed at the low reading it gave. Not much gold in there methinks.

Ask where they last saw/had the ring. Start where they saw it last and spiral outwards. Gridding will work too but you will miss a lot of ground if you walk too fast. A spiral pattern will mean you check each bit of ground from different angles. If it was a recent loss, the dry weather shouldnt be a problem.

Take your time, dont be in too much of a hurry. unless its a small holding with acres of land it wont take long to cover the entire garden.

I wouldnt discriminate out too much, gold rings are likely to give misleading signals.

Which machine do you have?

Eric.

Here's how I got on:

I called around the house on Tuesday afternoon and the lad said he was in the dog house for losing the ring. He'd been doing a lot of gardening over the weekend but hadn't realised the ring had gone till he was driving to work. After a bit of a chat he pointed out three areas where he was mainly working, they were all in the freshly dug over borders so it looked easy to search. They were also four green bags of garden waste to check, he'd had already emptied some zinc plant pots that morning checking for the ring.

The first place we started was near a tree stump he'd be chopping, this is where he thought he'd lost it. I set up the detector and left the headphones unplugged so we could both hear the signals. I started searching slowly and in a spiral pattern ( cheers  meatslicer) out from the stump after a few minutes and not a signal I could tell that the lad wasn't to impressed with my detector, so I dropped a penny and showed him it did work. It was then the lad told me he had already dumped some garden waste down the tip and that it could have been in there, this is where I started to get my doubts if the ring was in garden. :-\

I said we'd give the next area a go, he said he'd only put a few plants in there so we started round them. A couple of minutes in I get a signal, it was a bit iffy but the only one we'd had so I told the lad to dig it and up came a piece of foil . Not long after I got another signal about foot away, this one sounded good, so I told him to dig, after two spadefulls and a bit of spreading there it was in front of us!!  ;D The lad was over the moon and I was well chuffed that we'd found it  It's the only gold that I've ever found so I got a picture on my phone and headed off with the thanking me. Later on my girlfriend get's a text from the lads daughter saying that he'd got a case of beers for me as a thank you and will drop them down, so happy days all round  ;)

Thanks for all the tips, advice and offers of help they worked.

P.S - Will try and post the pic later
