Nobby is correct, DON'T, it depends on material and condition, if there is any chance it's of historical importance, let the experts take over.

On some videos they show the before and after of coins and other finds and it looks like they scrub them up really well..

It depends on what you have and what material it is made from.

In general, I don't touch anything that is bronze (apart from a soak and a gentle clean with a toothpick to get the mud off).

I'll clean (and straighten) any silver (apart from silvered items).

That being said, there are a number of items of the years that I have wished I haven't cleaned, although most of those are a long time ago now, and most of those were bronze.
