From what I know of woggles (which isn't much), underneath the "be prepared" there should be some type of insignia or design. Woggles can be made from almost anything but the type that you have found should relate to a particular scout group, unless you can identify the group dating may be difficult. Think the movement was started in 1897? by Baden Powell. When they did camp out I think the last thing the scout leader did was have a quick look around for woggles because they were notorious for slipping off the neckerchiefs.

It does look similar to other buckles of that time??

Im just guessing mate.
Ive found a site from around the same time as when the normans were in Hastings,
so i have been looking online for things i could possibly find from the area.
It looks very similar to a few i found online thats all.

I am still in awe Phil - if that doesn't walk away with find of the year at SCAN Club - I have no idea what would. I have looked at it numerous times and can find no exact comparison so far in all my reference books and on the net.

Love the horse head terminals on the far right of it. As I siad earlier I am guessing at roman Cavalry, but the circular dots on the main buckle plate may spell older. No bugger it, I am sticking with Roman - museum quality find mate.

Not sure if everyone on here realises how rare and perfect an artefact that is!

Truely amazing

Neil

Hell Phil that is the most stunning buckle I have ever seen, the condition is fantastic, gotta be Roman but there is a celtic influence there.
Never mind Cardiff scan I would say that it has got to be the find of the year countrywide as an artefact, something to cherish, well saved, you have every reason to be over the moon!

i call lou the prat because on wed. i called him to my side of new field, and he found a jamesist half groat, then we set up a gridding area, after 10 mins, he shouted hammy, when i looked he was in my gridding area , hence prat plus lots of other rude words fri, vac me an the prat louise went out , all day it was coogle or squirell, he calls me that because im always eating his chocalate, then he found a lovelly roman sersturius, and then a pipe tamper with a figure of a man, with a large c--k sticking out, or phallic in roman terms  how can we concentrate, we can t stop laughing well done lou 90 enjoy your moment of glory ps tamper is georgian  the vac and the fox will strike back john ::) ::) ;D ;D the second hammy was charles 1st half groat nice coins

Nice finds Phil.

If I'm not miustaken the long thin brooch is an early Le Tenne style fibula. Popular in France and then made it over here - not a common find. I think Maxines had one before.

Nice ring mate.

Keep up the good work and the longest post in DW history! ;D

Once again Phil - you come up with the goods mate. As Peter said some lovely buckles there! A nice smattering of Roman as well - good result!

This really is the everlasting thread. One of my mates on the International Detecting site I have been a long standing member of, who live in South Africa said he regularly comes on this site and always looks at your ongoing post first to see what you latest find is! You've gone global my friend! ;D

Well done

Nice finds Phil. The seal is Georgian or maybe a little bit earlier, and the hammie is Edward III.

phil - -re 9th october post - -middle row on rt -- i have an identical clasp with the internal heart -- i'm wondering how many other have such a find?

it may be worth plotting the whereabouts of these to see if there is a pattern

cheers

mine was found October 2005 in northamptonshire. i have recorded it with the FLO who identified as

"copper alloy, heart decoration, hinge or curved hook - 16th to 17th century suggested"

the NARC number is  6FBEB6

it would be interesting to see if the flo can pull off the location of such artefacts to see if there is a pattern to the distribution, they may just be peculiar to the midlands area. [yep i include GLAWSter in that!].

well worth an ask of your FLO -- ours is tied up with producing  a vast number of record sheets which her previous 2 predecessors hadn't provided to our club! [18 months to date]

http://www.findsdatabase.org.uk/hms/pas_obj.php?type=finds&id=001440700380120F (http://www.findsdatabase.org.uk/hms/pas_obj.php?type=finds&id=001440700380120F)

A copper-alloy incomplete object, probably an item for securing an item of furniture, book or dress accessory. The object has a field of openwork decoration with a heart in the centre. The field is broken to either side of the heart, but there was originally more openwork decoration at these points. At the bottom of the decorative field is a curved hook or hinge. Above the field the object has a T-shaped projection. This also appears to be broken, but was originally presumably for attachment purposes.

The heart shaped decoration suggests that this artefact dates from the post-medieval period and a date 16th or 17th century date is tentatively suggested.

The incomplete artefact measures 29.2 mm in length and 16.4 mm wide. It is 1.8 mm thick.

Great photos Phil - shame that buckle wasn't solid silver - still a nice find though.

I had a cracking day out mate - I'll post my photos when I get back from work later.

Love both of the buckles - particularly the plated one - thats quiote early Medieval mate.

That piece of engraved bronze you found was interesting as well - has an age to it.

Thanks again
Neil

Cracking finds Phil! The wotsit is very interesting and a first glance I though it was a bizzare pastry jigger, its not though - no idea what it is, but interesting all the same.

Well done on the hamster.

The photos are a bit blury due to hand shake mate - try resting your elbow against your knee of if you can flat on something. The settings were fine on your camera last time I looked at it.

Cheers
Neil

I agree Adie - now that you mention it - definately looks like the holes are for countersunk screws OR dare I say it the setting for huge rubies! ;D

Great Penny Phil and its really great to see you happy about finding a Vicky Penny! I would be also its a beauty mate - I love finding decent coppers as you saw last Sunday! ;D

Thanks Phil - that pic's a bit better. It's an Edward I penny, London mint, Class 4a I believe, or possibly a Class 4a/3g mule, because the two sides have two different types of the letter S.

Could you try and get a better pic again or bring it to the next meeting so I can get a pic then?

Great finds...and so many
Saw a programme about the forgotten Tudors last week on Discovery.
It featured Edward vi and Mary......wondered then if anybody had found any of this coinage, especially due to the short time on the throne????
Now I've seen one on the sight

Great to see such marvellous finds, well done again Phil :o

Keep posting...makes us more determined to go and find some ourselves.

Nice looking Romans Phil - well done! Great detail still on them.

I am interested in the boss as I have a bronze one very similar, but I just put it down to being Georgian. I may need to rethink that!

I think TaffLaff has a Swansea silver token as well - they are pretty collectable and worth a few quid.

Love the silver buckle - any hallmarks?

Cheers
Neil

Great finds Phil. Not sure what that hooked thing is - a bit like a scabbard hook, but not quite right. It looks a bit modernish in the pic - does it look or feel older to you?
