Me and Ron spent a few hours on some local pasture today and had quite a few finds.  We had a total of 29 coins, the oldest were 2 Cartwheel pennies, a couple of Vicky pennies and halfpennies and a mixture of pre and post decimal.  I had a watch winder with what looks like JOHN HAND Watchmaker and Jeweller, Plough, Brecon, any ID on this will be really appreciated and what looks like an unusual Georgie coin for ID please.  10 musket balls, a couple of old knives and the usual pull tabs and lead etc.   We seem to be getting to grips with our new machines, me with my T2 SE and Ron with his Deus Lite.  I'll post my pictures and Ron will post his later.   Cheers.   Tom.

The name on the Watch winder is Hando not just Hand and in 1891 at the age of 36 he lived with his wife Elizabeth at 1 Lion Street, Brecon but was originally from Newport, he was still going into the 20th century as this is from The Brecon County Times, Thursday 18 December 1913

Messrs John Hando, Ltd., 18, High street, are making the selection of presents of jewellery, silver, or glass a pleasure rather than a burden. The windows disclose an endless variety of pretty articles suitable for Christmas and New Year gift silver and electro-plate goods, watches, rings, pins, silver and cold mounted glass, ard a host of other things making one long for a purse that would imitate the widow's cruise of oil.

He also seems to have liked his soccer as he donated a cup to play for annually, It would be interesting to know if it's still going and if not where's the cup Wink

Thanks for the replies folks.  Wow! Geoff, brilliant research on the watch winder, you found the details so quick.
It's not just great to find these coins and artefacts, it's also nice to know their history.
I'm still not sure about cleaning my coins and artefacts so any ideas and help will be appreciated.  Thanks again.  Tom

There are only a few ways to clean finds properly and hell of lot of wrong ways and after ruining more things than I care to remember down the years, as I said on another thread, start gently until you know what your up against but a few weapons that you should have in your armoury are....

Distilled water (tap water is definitely not find friendly so avoid)
An ink eraser
Cocktail sticks
Cotton buds
A set of bristle artist brushes like-

A fibreglass pencil (easy does it)

SHMP (lasts for ages)

A bottle of lime juice (again easy does it it's acid at the end of the day)
Bicarbonate of soda (get your own and the wife won't shout at you)
Baking foil (as above Grin)
