Title: *Official* Detecting Wales Rally - Nether Stowey
Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on September 21, 2014, 08:22:49 PM
A loveley new farm for us to detect on in Nether Stowey, Somerset. This is a cracking area with a Norman Motte and bailey castle remains just a stones throw away. (No throwing stones on the farm)

We have 65 acres to detect which will be oat stubble, this will have been sprayed in a couple of days time so should be well dead and rotted.

The farmer is donating his fee to a local charity and as such I have said we will pass the bucket around during the rally talk. Loads of land on this farm for the future so here's hoping its a good one.

PS. I have asked the farmer if he has allowed any group detecting on this farm and his reply was 'I've not had anyone on this farm detecting to this day'  :)

This will be a DetectingWales.com members only rally and I'm afraid everyone attending must be over 16 years of age. Usual terms and conditions apply. Everyone who attends does so at their own risk and we recommended that everyone has civil liability insurance. If you are a member of a club you will probably already have this. Please check.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

The location of the rally will be sent by private message to everyone who has signed up the day before the rally and the rally fee is £7.00 as normal.

Weather looking OK for Sunday. A band of heavy rain - maybe an inch - will fall early Saturday in Somerset and once cleared will bring much cooler, fresher weather for the rest of the weekend. Sunday should be mainly dry but cloudy, with the chance of an odd shower. More rain expected later in the evening - hopefully by that time we'll all be back at home/in the pub.  :D

What have you been up to Andy ?

Nothing exciting Dylan :(  Was trying to dismantle an Antenna base at work, knelt down, phone in shirt pocket, pulled up hard on the leg of the mount, forcing my knee into the phone in the pocket and there was a loud click and some pain. Was getting worse by the day, but starting to settle down now a bit thank god. Its painful to pull the handbrake on the car at the moment, but was agony just to change gear yesterday, I get a click and a pain each time. Just come back from the docs, he says there is cartilage holding the rib to the sternum and I've damaged this, so not a broken rib as I thought it seems, well at least that's a bonus...  Just needs time to heal hopefully.  May make Sunday yet perhaps...

Hello all,

Does anyone know what time the dig will start in the morning?
I'm about to go offline - so won't be able to check for the address until morning - need to know what time to set the alarm.

Cheers,

Raven :)

Would love to Dylan, not sure Mrs Turner would be that impressed.

Great day today at the rally. Seven georgians coins and a Napolian. Weather was lovely when the sun came out and the scenery beautiful. Thanks for organising. This is my seventh weekend in a row going out on different rallies and I am loving it  :)

Hello all,

Had a great day out yesterday - Thank you!

The setting was beautiful and full of history, the talk before hand was very informative and useful!
Great to catch up with my other club members in the SAS (Somerset Artifact Seekers) and meet all the other people - all very friendly!

I found one hammy, a lizzy sixpence or shilling? and part of a Roman Fibular brooch - plenty of George pennies, buttons and a few other interesting bits.
Will post photo's tonight.

Just wondering if there are any photo's of dig finds anywhere on here? If so, there is a pic of the fibular and I hear Chef Geoff is a bit of an expert on them! and might be kind enough to give me some info on it?

My first dig with DW, thoroughly enjoyed the day - here's to many more!

Raven :)

Glad you enjoyed yourself Raven - report and photos should come out later today as it takes a while to write.

Cheffy is indeed your man to ID the fibula's date range

Cheers
Neil
