Whilst out detecting the Talacre sands the other week and trying out some new search methods with the Safari, I initially chucked this item into the finds bag assuming that it was just an other lost button. It was at about eight inches deep in damp sand (not wet) and gave a signal of 37 on the Safari whilst set up on auto sensitivity and all metals cross saved to coin and relic.

It weighs approximately 3.2 g, is 3.85 mm thick, and has a diameter of approximately 15.8 mm. The hole in the middle has a diameter of 5.5 mm but it was initially filled with sand and crud. The item appears to be gold plated base metal with lettering on both sides. Despite initial cleaning, it is difficult to discern the lettering and I plan to give it some time in an ultrasonic cleaner and then try photographing it whilst under cross-lighting.

Any ideas what it may be?

I initially thought "button" or "press stud" but upon noticing the lettering on both sides, thought that it may be something a little more interesting.  Sad

With some more time spent in the Maplin's ultrasonic cleaner and some close-up photography; the script appears to read GiOVann. Perhaps it originally read GiOVanni and was some form of  modern stud or button for jeans?

All part of the learning curve Chris. It was good practice for when I find something decent that needs cleaning up and deciphering. I have also got my self a "Garmin etrex 10" so I can accurately plot and map my finds for back referencing and comparison.

I have already been trying to join the dots at Talacre and see if I can discover some common connections between some of my finds there. The Garmin should be of some assistance with cross referencing.
