I don't know about you but one thing that is guaranteed to annoy me is to see holes not refilled or poorly refilled holes, particularly on pasture  >:(

I find it inexplicable ? ???  apart from the possible harm to horses and livestock that will be grazing there after we leave, its just the ingratitude to the land owner. >:(

Anyway apart from a general rant the purpose of this message is to tell you about a quandary I face about a new detecting buddy. We met on one of his fields yesterday which was clearly in daily use as a paddock for horses.

Walking back to show him one of my finds I was absolutley gob-smacked to see that he had dug a huge great bomb crater approx 20" across, considerably larger than a dustbin lid ????????????? ??? He had cut the turf into 4x equal pieces (like a pie) and without refilling the hole with the excavated earth, had roughly placed the 4x pieces of turf back in the hole . Naturally they had all sunk leaving a 6" deep depression.!

I was so flabergasted that I didn't say anything about it but I'm sure the land owner will have something to say to him the next time he walks his field .

Anyway my dilemma now is that I was intending to let him join me on one of my farms but given the way he digs his finds out I daren't. My farmer has a dairy herd and the fields are frequently used to turn out horses.
Its a tricky one.... ::)  I don't want to be too critical to my new detecting buddy who is currently clinically depressed,' very fragile' and has numerous other 'issues'  ::)but there again there is no way I could allow him on any of my permissions. Mmmm?

The only way to resolve a problem is to deal with the issue.

If you sit him down and explain that you'd like to invite him onto your farms but 'his' technique for refilling would not be allowed by 'your' farmer.
Explain that unless pasture is left pretty much as you found it, you'll be put in a situation were you could lose detecting rights there altogether.
Perhaps then he'll understand that he's doing something wrong and will in future remember to 'leave as found' then, you'd have no hesitation inviting him.

PS. If he wasn't as you say 'fragile' Just point and say "Oi, - fill that properly"...

If I were you, I would just mention that the farmer if very picky about the way holes are left so it's important for both of you to leave no trace, that way he won't feel that you are making a personal comment and he will feel that he is keeping your permission safe by doing a good job.
One of the few beauties of detecting at this time of year is that cows won't be out in the fields, so it gives the turf time to heal.

suggest he uses a hand trowel instead of a spade then maybe he or she will soon get the message.

I thought that if I cut a 6" square hole and flap whilst he was stood talking to me that he would get the general idea by watching me and I wouldn't have to say anything. ::)
Nope ...after a quick fag he went away and dug a hole you could bury a horse in . :o

I'll have to say something next time out but he's not going any of my fields untill he can pin-point a bit better. ;D

you could tell him that after the last outing the farmer complained about the mess :)
