Title: Roman brooch or armor application
Post by: dashunt on November 07, 2014, 12:29:55 PM
Hello,

I can't identify my latest find (PoLand near Opole) so maybe here I will have more luck:). The only information that I get is that my find is very old and it looks like thing from Roman Empire? Something like brooch or emblem? Found by Teknetics Delta 4000 + 11''.

My first ideas was: Mjolnir, cross of st. Anthony...

Width: 25mm / height: 15 mm

Hi Dashunt and welcome to DW ;)
I think you could be right with it being a Tau cross but I have my doubts of it being from the Roman period, as this was the emblem of the Franciscans order of monks then my money would be on it being medieval, I would be interested in seeing a better (side on) pic of the attachment points though.
Well done on your find and I look forward to seeing more from Poland ;)

Thank You:)! The first Franciscans was settled in Opole (city near my find) on 1241. It's an interesting hypotesis... Photos in better resolution attached but sorry for my low photographic skills.

Thank You guys. Funny thing about is that my best finds I found 200 meters from my house (this cross too). It's a agricultural region, village with 30 houses but I found there piece of Roman coin, silver Prussian coins (1768, 1818, 1867), German coins, something with napoleonic eagle, Prussian buttons, shells of Mauser (WW1), russian shells (TT pistol/PPSh) (WW2).

History of my region is:
from 990 -  Poland
1526 - Habsburg Monarchy
1741 - Kingdom of Prussia
1871 - Deutsches Reich
1918 - Weimarer Republik
1933 - Third Reich
1945 - Poland
So it's a lot of possibilities:).

Greetings! (and sorry for my english)
