Hi,

I'm new to this hobby, so new that I haven't been out with my detector yet.

I was just wondering when is best to go detecting - when the field has been ploughed,
                                                                              - or just in a field with fairly short grass?
any advice will help

cheers

ps looking for land to detect in either Llangollen area or Penyffordd/Broughton area

Hi Daz The best time to go detecting is now after all that rain we just had, the shorter the grass the better as your coil is closer to the ground, ploughed is a bonus as it will turn up the older finds Wink good luck

After the crops go in, oil seed rape for example is drilled by dropping into a small trench behind a set of finger bars that shake and lift the soil. This gives a flat surface and lifts any finds closer to the surface where you can get at them.

The only draw-back is the air pockets this leaves as detectors dont usually detect through air as well as they detect through solid compacted earth.

After rain, the air has been replaced with water making detecting easier.

I've thought of beaches but wouldn't you find more modern stuff that old stuff?

Depends where on the beach and which beaches you go on.

Barry island after a hot bank holiday weekend is good if you want to find gold rings and spendable money, Ogmore at the moment has been scoured down to pebbles a long way out so there should be more areas to search for older items from wrecks and losses.

Ogmore and porthcawl have the highest concentration of wrecks in the UK due to the sand bars and tides over the last few hundred years. The bristol channel has the highest tidal range in the uk so stuff gets moved around a hell of a lot between tides. Penarth beach near the pier has a good selection of losses and stuff dropped from boats.

You just have to do a little detective work to see which one suits you.
