Title: National OS grid reference on Google earth
Post by: Chef Geoff on November 22, 2010, 01:00:19 PM
I have just had a phone call from a member of a different forum asking how to convert the normal Lat Long coordinates from google earth to the OS grid preferred by FLO's and UKDFD.
Most FLO's will convert these themselves but to make live easier for them should you want to, you can down load an OS grid overlay from here:-    http://www.nearby.org.uk/google/grid_gb.kmz (http://www.nearby.org.uk/google/grid_gb.kmz)

When you select open it will open Google earth with the grid placed over it, you then need to save this by clicking on "save as my places" from the file menu this moves it from Temp to permanent..

All you then have to do is to locate your find spot on GE, double click on it which will centre it, then tick the "centre point" box on the left, this will bring up a picture of a house over your find spot complete with a 10 figure OS grid ref.

I have used it for many years and it's funny how you just assume everyone knows about it, so for those who don't give it a go............you will make your FLO's happy.

I did used to use a separate site for conversion but now find it so much easier having the tools within google earth, it just saves some time typing in coordinates and swapping between screens.

Aha! Ok I see, The one I posted is really for people who keep records of finds in KLM files on their computer.
It may be a nice idea for some of us to post exactly how we keep our records, it may help some of the new comers to the hobby see how easy it can be. ???
