Title: Mission complete!
Post by: Christoph1945 on October 15, 2013, 12:13:46 PM
Having found a Samsung Ch@t222 G2-E2220 mobile phone uncovered by the driving wind the other day, I removed all the sand sticking to it, dried it out, and then managed to charge the battery up. A quick check on the contacts file eventually allowed me to track down the owner and today at 1125 am I was able to hand the phone over to a grateful young lady.

To quote Mr Shakespeare....." All is well that ends well "   ;D

I'm guessing that returning my gold signet ring find may take considerably longer; but hell, its worth a try!   ;)

I hope so! I am presently chasing up permission on some land but have learned that the farmers may be prepared to say yes but the council and RSPB may stand in the way. I may have to travel a very long and convoluted path to succeed in getting permission to detect the land that I am after!   ::)

That's a cracking story - glad it still worked too. How long ago had it been lost?

That's a cracking story - glad it still worked too. How long ago had it been lost?

I understand that it was lost about six months ago but must have still accepted messages for some time. It had been laid, face down, some two or more inches below the surface of the sand but the high winds last week uncovered it ready for me to come walking by and spot it eyes only.

Initially, it was dead and the screen looked rather milky and the buttons and sockets were all full of fine sand. With some brushing with a 1" paint brush that I had cut down, and some gentle blowing, I was able to remove all the sand. I then popped it on a shelf over the gas fire and gave it a good few hours to dry out and got the screen to start looking something like normal. After some trial and error, I found a charger that fitted and "BINGO" it responded to a bit of TLC.

Hand over was a bit brief......I got a handshake, a thank you, and that was it. But having said that; I got a real nice feeling from having done my good deed for the week.   ;)

Beach detecting is not my cup of tea Chris, but I might take a walk down one Sunday for a natter.

RSPB may stand in the way.

RSPB ? What on earth could they have against metal detecting ???

Svaipa,  Many birds nest on the ground and will be disturbed if you go too close.  RSPB don't usually move on any of their policies. Like most charitable organisations, they are a law unto themselves.

Well, I'm not sure, but I intend to find out; it may take me some time and research. I know that some beaches are out of bounds to detectorists and they say that they are RSPB reserves. I often think that the said beaches have an historic munitions problem and RSPB is used as a cover to keep us out.
I intend trying to chat to two farmers this week ask if I can have permission to detect on their land; and if they say that they would let me but the council would object because they are tenant farmers I will then ask the council for permission. Remember when your kids were young, they would tell you that mother said they could go somewhere but they had to ask you? I fell for that one several times!

Interestingly, the wife of one tenant farmer gave me loads of information about the area and informed me that her niece had her own farm just a mile or two up the road. Ah ha, when one door closes, an other may open. I'm also going to chase up a contact in the RSPB; the wife and I used to be members.

                                   Fingers crossed, here we go!!!!

Yes, I know. I used to be a nature reserve warden on an island closed to the public during breeding season. But unless this is in a reserve closed to the public I can't see they have a valid point. A detectorist will do a lot less damage than dogs or kids running riot.

I don't think the RSPB in themselves have the power or interest to stop detecting as many reserves are simply managed by them but many are registered as SSSi not only for birds but also for the flora, fauna and other wildlife :-\

I recently heard that inflicting damage to an SSSi site could get you a six thousand pound fine or six months in jail; or even both. Is that correct?  ::)

Me to, but not at HMP!!!!  ???

Perhaps six moths detecting a tropical beach somewhere, but nowhere close to the South Pacific; not with all that WWII ordnance still knocking about!  :-\

I dunno, sometimes I think being locked up in a room for a few months has it's attrative side. Could get through all the good books I never get around to read, and not have to wory about a thing.
