Title: shortcross Post by: handyman [Alan} on May 25, 2016, 01:00:53 PM Found this yesterday on a field we'd been searching for over 10 years. It's the first hammered off the field.
Am well pleased as i think it dates from 1180 to 1216, covering the reign of Richard and John. I welcome confirmation that its canterbury mint with the moneyer probably being Godwine... and any more info re class etc would be appreciated. cheers Title: Re: shortcross Post by: david995 on May 25, 2016, 01:18:52 PM That's not the usual run of the mill hammered, well done .

Title: Re: shortcross Post by: handyman [Alan} on May 25, 2016, 04:11:59 PM could be Coldwine on cant checking the moneyers in spink .... suggests it was Goldwine who was working through both reigns in Canterbury. Its a Richard I .....GOLDWINE ON CANT..... Johns early 4c class COLDWINE has a reversed letter S... The S on your example is the right way around shown just below the King ;) Title: Re: shortcross Post by: handyman [Alan} on May 25, 2016, 06:58:22 PM wow .. than you Dale .... that is a great result ... my second Dickie!

Your welcome Alan :) If you look at your coin you will notice you have no pellet in the hair curl, neither has John on his early 4c class, but the later classes has a pellet in the curls..... Try Google imaging Johns coins and look at the pellets in hair curls, you will see the difference. |
