Help Please

(1/1)

Zerocool69:
Hi all, I was hoping that somebody here could help me please. I went out detecting in some fields today, as my friend has secured permissions on some very large fields. I managed to find some old pennies and some Half pennies along with some modern coins. I did find though a really thin black coin that is very heavily crusted and as such is extremely difficult to decipher, There looks to be a bit of writing along the very edge on the one side, but as I said, it's difficult to make out. It was about a foot down in the soil, and measured a reading of 23 on my Equinox 800. I'm really sure it's a hammered coin, and that it's been there for some time. I know that it's difficult to answer without pictures, but is there any way of finding out what coin this is, or maybe cleaning it so I can find out more. Apart from spraying it with some water I have done very little as I don't want to ruin this coin.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Please add a picture as pretty impossible to comment otherwise.

Most of the coins I have had in the 23 range on my Nox are old pennies - sometimes these can be quite black if they have been burnt.

I sometimes got half silver florins at that number as well, and some earlier halfpennies.

Problem is, I haven't found enough hammered coins recently (with the Nox) to remember where they came, but generally good silver coins have higher numbers.

Neil:
Sounds lie a   hammered coin. Take a photo with your phone and post directly to our Facebook page if you are unable to post in on here. Well done.

Neil
