Beaches are free to detect, with the exeption of some private ones, You'll need a free permit which you can download online, unfortunately the Crown doesnt own them all :(

This may help you : https://www.thecrownestate.co.uk/rural-and-coastal/coastal/metal-detecting/ (https://www.thecrownestate.co.uk/rural-and-coastal/coastal/metal-detecting/)

Word of warning if you do intend to detect beaches. The Garrett detectors are not too good on wet sand.
As far as detecting anywhere else just remember that ever inch of ground in The UK is owned by someone and you need thier permission before you start digging up gold torcs.
This can be a pain. Many land owners won't give permission. It's just a case of keep knocking on doors till you get a yes (unless you know someone already) Always be polite, considerate, fill the holes in, shut the gates, take your rubbish home with you and you might be surprised that the Farmer will point you towards a friend or two.

Don't think you can down load a permit at present because they are changing the system or something!!. All seems to be up in the air, probably thinking of bringing in a charge!.
