In the eighties I started searching fields belonging to a farm some 5 or 6 miles away and have had a mass of medieval finds but for various reasons never really concentrated on the fields close to the farm. However a couple of years ago I decided to rectify this and with interesting results, as I wondered up a gentle slope I started to notice darker soil with pieces of roman pottery scattered.  By the time I got to the top of the slope I had amassed a large quantity of pottery and a lot of lead the picture shows how much I had picked up over many visits, however apart from this as yet for some strange reason hardly any coins or brooches the best being a reasonable sestertius . Today I returned to the field now in stubble til spring when it will be ploughed!! So will allow a good search time, I found myself sat on this gentle slope today with the fog down around me and an Iron Age Hill fort not three fields away protruding thru the fog, although no coins just pieces of lead again I did get a deep signal which has turned out to be   very interesting find, it is made of lead (ancient) and weighs  6 ounces. When found I could see incised lines on top but not underneath and it was not till I got home and cleaned it up I could see it is a snake with eyes as well, I feel sure it is Roman possibly Celtic?. As you can see it has a lead link so may well have had more attached at present this has got me stumped so I would appreciate your comments or identification cheers  Paul.
